TARIME - TANZANIA

REGION: Tarime, Mara

PROCESS: Natural

VARIETIES: Kent & N39

ALTITUDE: 1600 - 1800 MASL

HARVEST: June - October

NOTES: Blueberry, winey, floral

We’ve secured a very limited amount of this stunning natural from Tarime, a small municipality near Kenya's border where producers are improving practices and receiving higher premiums. We’re tasting fresh blueberries, chewy dark fruits and wine-like booziness, combining beautifully for our first venture into Tanzanian coffee.

FROM OUR IMPORTER - DRWakefield

Close to the border of Kenya, lies Tarime, a small municipality with washing station nearby serving the smallholders in the nearby surroundings. On average, each producer will have 1-2 acres, (less than one hectare) and farms are generally shared with other cash crops and subsistence foods. Regulations changed between 2017-2019 that led to several farmers ceasing operations due to the uncertainty. Farms were neglected and both volume and quality suffered as a result. In 2020, a concerted effort was made to revive the area. Due to the previous investment in facilities and the area's history of producing high-quality coffee, it was seen as a worthwhile endeavour. This focussed on better production practises and paying higher premiums to reward the quality and has seen many farmers return to growing coffee.

Natural processed coffees are common in the area, but once the cherries have been processed at the wet mill they are shipped to Moshi for hulling and sorting, grading and packing.
