REGION: Guatemala, Fraijanes & Alotenango - Sacatepéquez
CONTRIBUTING PRODUCERS: Gildardo Martínez & Neptalí Orozco
PROCESS: Washed
VARIETIES: Bourbon & Marsellesa
ALTITUDE: 1200-1700 MASL
NOTES: Almond nougat & plum, chocolatey & sessionable
This smallholder blend from the Sacatepéquez region of Guatemala is chocolatey and sessionable. Produced by Gildardo Martínez and Neptalí Orozco, the coffee grows on the slopes of volcanoes where the soils are known as 'andosols' - excellent for plant root development, water retention and resistance to drought.
We sourced this particular coffee for its clean and comforting notes- lower acidity than much of our offering, it provides a welcome contrast. There's lots of dark chocolate, some chewy almond texture, and soft background notes of plum and citrus. We've developed the roast a little more to highlight these characteristics- so it makes just as good an espresso as filter brew.
From our importer - Caravela
Guatemala is known for its dazzling topography which makes up the Sierra Madre Mountain range that runs through the country, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. 37 volcanoes rise from 2050 to 3020 masl, all with different formations. Some are high-rise conical volcanoes, some are lava domes, and still others form cinder cones. All this makes Guatemala a very seismic territory. The producers that grow Volcanes are small-scale coffee growers, located on the slopes of the volcanoes and nearby areas. These soils are known as "Andosols" and are excellent for plant root development, water retention, and resistance to drought. These producers over time have managed to take advantage of the volcanic material found in the soil to produce high quality coffee and nutritious vegetables, creating a balance that benefits their family economy and provides additional sources of income.
