Ñuu Davii translates to 'People of the Rain' in the Mixtec indigenous language, which 99% of the community that harvested this coffee speak. Between 1530 and 1550, two families fled the high Mixtec region to escape Spanish conquest. Over time they moved to the Sierra Mazateca, where they established their own Mixtec community. For decades, Mixtec producers have relied on coffee, growing it alongside fruit and timber. This practice protects the coffee from adverse weather, and promotes ecosystem conservation. Ensambles has been working with Mixtec producers since 2021, training coffee growers in sustainable agricultural practices and analysing samples to ensure fair prices based on quality.
FROM OUR IMPORTER - ENSAMBLES
Ñuu Davii is a lot harvested by the only Mixtec indigenous people living in the Sierra Mazateca, Oaxaca. This indigenous community resides specifically in the municipality of San Juan Coatzóspam, where 99% of the inhabitants speak the Mixtec language. The locality was founded between 1530 and 1550, when two families fled the high Mixtec region to escape Spanish conquest and settled in the Sierra Cuicateca. Over time, one of the families reached Huautla de Jiménez, the territory of the Mazatecs, where they were rejected by the local population. Following this event, the family decided to move north and establish their own Mixtec community in the Sierra Mazateca.
For decades, Mixtec producers have relied on coffee, growing it alongside fruit and timber trees. This practice protects the coffee plants from adverse weather and promotes ecosystem conservation. They also cultivate milpa, which includes beans, squash, corn, chili, and other crops, enhancing food and economic security for their families.
